Bat Request

I’ve always tried to keep this site separate from my work, but there’s an exception to every rule.

Right now I’m working on a story about White Nose Syndrome, a disease that’s killing cave-dwelling American bats at a pace unprecedented in known animal history. The work will be published on Wired and is being produced through Spot.us, a service that allows citizens to directly support journalism they care about — journalism that is, sadly, dwindling in a time of free content and pageview-driven metrics and general economic catastrophe.

If you’ve happened to stumble across my site, I invite you to read my pitch on Spot.us and consider donating. If money’s tight, you don’t even need to give from your pocket; right now you can earn money for the story just by taking a poll. Your help will make this story possible.

Thank you,

Brandon

Brandon, I am a life long nature enthusiast. I have always had Interest, respect, and admiration for all living things – including the beloved seasonal Brown Bat. I live in the Northern Chicagoland suburbs and caught the story of the rabid brown bat killed in the Arlington Heights Village 4th floor. I know of two large chimneys in the area were hundreds of brown bats reside in the summer for sure. Not being a bat expert, I am guessing that they migrate elsewhere for during our winter season.
Wondering if bat biologist Brooke Slack or any bat scientists would be interested in knowing the location of the brown bat summer homes in my area. I could take a picture of each and provide the Long/Lat location for each. One is in downtown Mt. Prospect, IL (near Arlington Heights)’ the other is in Wheeling, IL.
Thank you for the great articles. Ray Schwarz

Ray,

Thanks for getting in touch. I’d say the person to start with is Joe Kath, endangered species project manager with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. He’s a pretty big bat guy, and might be able to help. Good luck and let me know how it goes,

Brandon
